This function extracts a transect or surface from a larger matrix. If the input matrix is a rectangular matrix, either a row or column may be extracted to form a rectangular matrix with a single column. If the input matrix is a three-dimensional data matrix, a single transect (column/row) in any (x, y, or z) direction can be extracted into a single column matrix or an entire surface (plane) can be extracted from any (x, y, or z) direction.
